3mm steel garden edging showing material thickness

2mm vs 3mm Steel: Does Thickness Matter for Garden Products?

Steel thickness matters most where the product is structural or ground-driven: 3mm is the right spec for lawn edging that gets hammered into soil, while 2mm is ideal for planters and log stores, where it balances strength, weight and cost. Thicker isn't automatically better — it's about matching gauge to job.

What gauge means in practice

Thickness determines three things: rigidity (resistance to flexing and denting), weight (handling and delivery), and corrosion margin (how many decades of surface weathering the piece can absorb). Doubling thickness roughly doubles weight and cost — so good design uses the right gauge per product, not the maximum.

Where 3mm earns its keep

Edensteel's lawn edging is 3mm because edging leads a hard life: driven into ground with a mallet, mowed against, and expected to hold a perfect line through frost heave. Thinner edging (many competitors use 1.5–2mm) can ripple during installation and deform against tree roots.

Where 2mm is the sweet spot

Planters, log stores and similar box structures gain rigidity from their welded shape — the folded and welded panels brace each other, so 2mm gives ample strength without unnecessary weight. A 2mm Corten planter still carries a corrosion margin measured in decades.

Fire and water products

Fire pits benefit from heavier material to handle repeated heat cycling without distortion; ponds and water features are specified for the water pressure they hold. In both cases the fabrication (weld quality, base design) matters as much as the gauge number.

Frequently asked questions

Does thicker steel rust slower?

The patina forms at the same rate regardless of thickness — but thicker steel has more material margin, so its structural lifespan is longer. See how the patina works.

Is 1.5mm steel edging worth buying?

It's cheaper, but installation is where thin edging fails — rippling under the mallet and folding against stones. 3mm installs cleanly and holds its line.

Why not make everything 5mm?

Weight and cost with no practical benefit — a 5mm planter would cost far more to make and ship yet last no meaningfully longer in a garden setting.

How can I check what I'm buying?

Reputable makers state gauge on the product page — if a listing doesn't mention thickness, ask before buying.
