Why corten steel works in a garden of any size
Corten weathers rather than rusts through. Left outside, the surface oxidises into a dense russet patina that protects the steel beneath it, so a piece that arrives raw and silver/grey settles into deep orange-brown over its first few months and then holds that colour. No painting, no treating, no annual once-over.
That patina is why it suits such different gardens. The colour sits behind planting complementing not competing, so a single trough works as hard in a four-metre courtyard as a run of modular planters does across a large terrace. And because the steel carries its own structure, the pieces can be thinner-walled and less bulky than the equivalent in stone or timber - which matters enormously when you're short of space.
While a courtyard benefits from fewer, taller objects to draw the eye upward, a large garden needs weight and repetition.
A commercial space has to survive the hustle and bustle of a busy working day.
