Autumn Planting in Raised Beds: What to Sow and Plant from Late August

From late August, raised beds can be sown with overwintering salads and spring greens, planted with garlic and onion sets from September, and stocked with perennials, shrubs and spring bulbs — autumn is actually the best planting season of the year, because warm soil and reliable rain establish roots with almost no watering from you.

Why autumn beats spring for planting

In autumn, soil holds summer warmth while rain returns — the perfect rooting combination. Autumn-planted perennials and shrubs establish through winter and romp away in spring, whereas spring-planted equivalents spend their first months just coping. Raised beds sharpen the advantage: they drain freely, so autumn rain helps without waterlogging (the pitfall covered in our drainage guide).

Edibles to start now

  • Late August–September sowings: winter salads (lamb's lettuce, mizuna, winter-hardy rocket), spinach, spring cabbage and turnips.
  • September–October plantings: garlic cloves and overwintering onion sets — both actively want a cold spell.
  • Through autumn: broad beans (Aquadulce types) sown October–November for the earliest spring crop.

All suit the 400mm depth of a standard modular raised bed — and the safety question is answered in our vegetables in Corten guide.

Ornamentals and bulbs

September–November is prime time for perennials, shrubs and evergreen structure (the skeleton-building covered in our year-round garden guide). Layer spring bulbs into planters and bed edges: daffodils and crocus by end of October, tulips in November after frosts have cooled the soil.

Feed the soil while it rests

Any bed section standing empty over winter benefits from either a green manure (field beans, phacelia — sown by mid-September, dug in come spring) or a mulch of compost or manure laid on the surface for worms to work in. Empty, bare soil over winter is a wasted asset.

Frequently asked questions

Is it too late to start a raised bed in autumn?

It's the ideal time — build now, fill, plant garlic and bulbs immediately, and the bed is productive from its first spring. Planning help is in the modular layout guide.

Do autumn sowings need protection?

Most listed here are fully hardy; a cloche or fleece simply speeds winter salads along.

Should I water autumn plantings?

Water in once at planting — autumn rain usually handles the rest, one of the season's great labour savings.

Can I plant bulbs in steel planters too?

Beautifully — layer ('lasagne-plant') tulips, daffodils and crocus at different depths in one planter for eight weeks of succession.
