How to Care for Corten Steel: Maintenance Tips to Protect the Patina

Corten steel needs almost no ongoing maintenance: don't scrub or paint the patina, ensure good drainage, and protect pale paving during the first few months while the patina is still forming. Here is the complete, short list of dos and don'ts.

Do

• Let it weather naturally. The patina is a protective layer, not dirt — it's meant to stay.
• Ensure drainage. Stand planters on pot feet or a gravel bed so water doesn't pool permanently against the steel.
• Rinse off garden debris occasionally with plain water if leaves or soil build up — no chemicals needed.
• Apply a clear matte sealant once the patina reaches a shade you like, if you want to lock it in and stop further staining.

Don't

• Don't pressure wash the patina — it can strip the protective surface layer.
• Don't use wire brushes or abrasives to "clean" rust — you'll remove the very layer that protects the steel.
• Don't paint or varnish unless you specifically want to change the look permanently — most sealants are designed to preserve the natural finish, not cover it.
• Don't place new pieces directly on pale sandstone or limestone without protection during the first 6–12 weeks — see below.
